A Call That Changed Everything
Episode 1
It was a cool December evening in 2008. The winter breeze carried a quiet calm, and twenty-year-old Naqash was busy helping his mother with household chores. Life felt simple, ordinary — until the phone rang.
On the screen: Unknown Number.
Naqash answered, “Hello?”
A soft, unfamiliar voice replied, “Hello… I’m Shmaila.”
The name meant nothing to him. “And who are you?” he asked, curiosity in his tone.
“I want to be friends with you,” the girl said confidently.
Naqash frowned slightly. “Friends? But I don’t know who you are or where you’re speaking from. How can we be friends?”
The girl giggled, “I’m speaking from my mouth.”
A smile tugged at his lips. “From your mouth? Then remove your tongue — how will you speak?”
She laughed, enjoying the playful banter. “You’re right… I’m speaking from Jalalpur.”
Naqash leaned closer to the phone. “I know Jalalpur… but which part?”
“Chandni Chowk,” she replied.
Naqash hesitated. His mother was nearby, and he didn’t want to continue the conversation. “Alright, but I’m busy right now. We’ll talk later.” With that, he ended the call and returned to helping his mother.
The Midnight Curiosity
Back at work, his hands were busy, but his mind wasn’t. Who was this girl? Why did she want to be friends with me?
It was the first time in his life a girl had called him like this, and excitement mixed with confusion. Maybe one of my friends is playing a prank using a girl’s voice, he thought. Still, something in her tone felt real.
By the time he finished his chores, Naqash had made up his mind — he would call her back that night to find out the truth.
After dinner, he slipped out to a nearby shop, bought mobile credit, and waited. When everyone was asleep, he quietly made his way to the rooftop, phone in hand, and dialed her number.
No answer. He tried again. Still nothing.
Disappointed, he returned to bed. Half an hour later, his phone lit up — it was her. But before he could react, his mother, who happened to be nearby, saw the phone ringing and picked it up.
“Hi baby, my dear, my love… I love you so much. I can’t sleep without talking to you. Please, don’t hurt me,” the girl’s voice poured through the speaker — soft, emotional, and deeply romantic.
Naqash’s mother froze, listening to every word. She didn’t respond, simply ended the call and kept her thoughts to herself.
By sunrise, she had one burning question for her son:
Morning arrived with sunlight — and silence. Naqash sensed something was different. His mother looked at him longer than usual, her eyes filled with questions she was holding back.
Finally, she spoke.
“Who was the girl calling you last night?”
Naqash’s heart skipped a beat. His mind raced for answers. He lowered his eyes and said carefully, “Ammi… it was a wrong number. I don’t even know her properly.”
His mother studied his face. She didn’t shout, didn’t accuse — she simply warned him gently.
“Be careful. These things can bring trouble.”
Naqash nodded, though his thoughts were already elsewhere. The voice from the night echoed in his mind. Baby… my love…
He needed answers.
A Call That Changed the Tone
That evening, Naqash gathered courage and called the number again. This time, she answered.
“Hello?” her voice said softly.
“Why did you talk like that last night?” Naqash asked, half confused, half nervous.
She went quiet for a moment… then laughed nervously.
“I thought it was you,” she said. “I didn’t know someone else would answer.”
There was embarrassment on both sides — but also honesty. Slowly, the conversation changed. Less jokes. More truth.
They talked about small things: daily life, family, dreams. Time slipped away unnoticed. For the first time, Naqash felt something unfamiliar — comfort with a stranger.
Days turned into nights. Nights into long phone calls. What began as curiosity slowly turned into attachment.
When Friendship Became More
By the end of December, their calls had become a routine. If a day passed without talking, it felt incomplete.
Laiba — or “Shmaila”, as he still knew her — was playful yet emotional. Naqash was calm but deeply attentive. They argued sometimes, laughed often, and shared secrets they had never told anyone before.
But love is never simple.
One night, a small misunderstanding turned into their first real fight.
“You don’t trust me,” she said angrily.
“And you hide things from me,” Naqash replied.
The call ended abruptly. Silence followed.
That night felt longer than all the nights before. Naqash stared at his phone, realizing something painful yet beautiful — he cared. Deeply.
The Fear of Losing Each Other
Two days passed without a call. Pride stood between them, heavy and stubborn.
On the third night, Naqash finally dialed.
“I don’t want to lose you,” he said quietly.
There was a pause… then a soft reply.
“I was waiting for you to say that.”
That moment changed everything. Friendship crossed into something deeper — something neither of them could deny anymore.
